Photorealistic CGI Human

June 26th, 2008

If anyone recalls, the completely CGI animated “Polar Express” was REAMED by critics for the lifelessness of its characters. I remember seeing the trailer, with it’s Tom Hank-esque conductor leaning over and lecturing one of the kids—it was actually one of the scarier performances I’d scene in a trailer in awhile.

This would be the OPPOSITE of that.

  1. I kind of feel the same way about CG humans as I do about Chroma Key. The only reason to do photo-real CG people is to do things that normal people couldn’t do. That’s why I thought Polar Express was such a catastrophe. Why not just use real actors? That movie would have been charming and entertaining, possibly classic, had they just let Tom Hanks act.

  2. Totally agree with Brent. People are people, CG People aren’t necessarily people too…well, until now, apparently. Scary, but in an OMG kinda way, versus the train wreck that was the Polar Express version of humankind. This is pretty much over the top. Thanks for sharing-

  3. The expression needs to come from the cheeks and eyes more. They lead the way, give away our emotions. They are too lifeless here.

I think there is too much Subsurface, the skin is glowy.

The lack of shadows in the mouth are also a problem, but an easy fix.

The wrinkles around the eyes should be more subtle, thinner lines.

    It’s a really good work though! : )

  4. nice.
ditto on the mouth shadow problem.

i would disagree about “glowy” skin.

actually, the trick you missed, is oil on the face. look at some makeup websites, study how oil deposits on the skin, in what patterns. dry skin types, with flakey pale waxy qualities, and oily patches around the nose, ears and eyes, with a subtle or obvious sheen depending on the area.

getting that shiny oily skin just right, is the tiny step from cg to photoreal that no cg artists seem to ‘get’.

oil, oil, oil, shiny forehead, shiny crown.

you have google, use it ;·)

then, it’s missing the subtle effect of slightly translucent ears, light coming through the cheeks, through the skin of the nose. the tint has to be red on translucent parts. more red in the eyelid exposed skin, blood in all people is red, it underlies all inner soft tissue, even on dark african skin.

and where are the thumping veins in the neck???

still. very nice overall. great work on the details, neck muscles, etc.
