Hey Katherine –

Thanks for the comments! I’ve always been of the mind that specializing is critical to a successful business. While having a wide breadth of services can be good for clients (cardinal rule: never say “no,” just tell the client what it will cost!), I think it is vital to have one thing that you’re an expert at. The age old “T” theory of business (go wide and shallow on many subjects, and go deep on one area). Do you find that you’re perceived as an expert in one specific area, but able to perform well in a wide range? Or do you sell all your services equally?

Certainly, the business side of video production can be quite complex. I have found that the best way to overcome this obstacle is to offer as many different types of services as possible (video production, graphic and web design, advertising, and marketing) and our productions will speak for themselves. But, search engine optimization and utilization of social media networking definitely can help a business obtain more clients. Good luck in your endeavors!

It’s a really exciting to see how far digital cameras and camcorders have come. I just watched “The Great Camera Shootout” for this years cameras (first episode here http://vimeo.com/24334733 ) and the RED and Alexa cameras were right up there with Film cameras. I can see that DSLRs have a way to go in some areas, but they performed really well in low light especially. I read a lot of critical reviews of the AF100 before it came out, but now it seems like it’s really providing a good, inexpensive alternative to shooting on a RED for certain applications.
