A client wanted to see a specific sample of what our RED One camera could do, so Bill and I grabbed an intern, set up and shot this sample in a couple hours. Often, giving the client something to look at can really help explain a concept. While we can’t always shoot a proprietary sample for a client, when we can do something like this, it really helps!
What was my “take away” from the experience? Man I love what Bill can make this camera do!
There are lots of people in this industry who are trying to push the medium as far as it will go, not content with the status quo. These people try to incorporate the fridge technologies from other industries to see what they can do for filmmaking. This is the new Radiohead video for the song “House of Cards”; it’s a cool video on it’s own but it gets cooler when you learn they didn’t use cameras or lights. See what inspiration you can draw from this and then see if you can make it work!!

Two trailers from the same filmmaker, Ayz Waraich.
I’m not plugging him or his films, i don’t even know what they’re about, but what I think we should see here are two great examples of hooking people into a story. What may be more impressive than any of this is that Ayz uses a pretty basic, consumer-grade, auto-exposure camera (Canon HV20), but balances that out by employing cinematic conventions–dolly moves, tracking shots, crane/jib shots, a bit of overexposure, well-planned lens flares, and most importantly, GREAT lighting schemes (i really dig those flares from the flourescent overheads in the White Red Panic* teaser).
So remember, it’s not always what you’re telling your story with, but what story you’re telling.
What do you do when you have a problem with a camera that the manufacturers of the camera can’t figure out, and can’t reproduce? Well, in our case when I hear that the problem has reared it’s ugly head I yell ROLL TAPE ON IT! We now have something to show Panasonic so we can hopefully get our #2 camera repaired and fuly functional! Anyone else ever see this problem in an HVX200?
