real world examples for photoshop

June 11th, 2008

I was invited to speak at Palomar College for their Digital Imaging with Photoshop – Real World Examples video series. I'm certainly not a Photoshop expert, but hopefully I offered some value for their students.

Special thanks to Bill Wisneski and his entire crew at PCTV; A great bunch of professionals dedicated to providing a quality product for their student body and the community at large. Palomar has an excellent program and I had a lot of fun!

Podcasting and Minjas?

June 9th, 2008

Becoming an expert on the latest trends in technology is important if you want to create top notch media for customers. I get a little confused sometimes.. so when I have a complex question as important as “what is podcasting” or .. are there such things as Minjas? I turn to a Ninja to answer my questions.

Graphic Novel + Diary = “Men in Black”

June 9th, 2008

And if you’re expecting a post about Will Smith saving the galaxy, stop here.

However, the following is an amazing animation by Chris Koelle based entirely on the memoirs of Army Specialist Colby Buzzell from his time in the Middle East.
It may be the most intense and “real,” 4 minutes and 30 seconds of your day.

“Men In Black”

What I dig most about this is how well it blends the two worlds of the graphic novel and filmmaking. I mean, flipping through a well done comic book is pretty much like looking at storyboards…but what Koelle found was the “subtext” in each image; what needs to be in focus, what do we “dolly” in, how would the camera move in this shot if bullets suddenly start flying around in the frame, and how does that effect the narrative?

But I also appreciate the poignancy of the work…it’s not this baroque, Michael Bay action flick shot on a soundstage in 35mm. Such a strategy would romanticize these experiences—which I think in some sections the artist resorted to strategies used in these kinds of films (at one point he even uses the patented Michael Bay “time-remapped camera pan as the world explodes around you”).
While the “comic book” aesthetic has worked before for other wartime / apocalyptic stories, being based on actual memoirs makes the visuals feel less like a comic book and more like something Specialist Buzzell could’ve sketched beside his journal, that suddenly sprung to life and began careening out of control in cadence with the war around him.

Storytelling via “still” frames has come a long way since Chris Marker’s “La Jetee” (the 1962 inspiration for “12 Monkeys”). This, though, has that same sense of “aura” that i felt was imbued in Chris Marker’s archetypical work.

Bootcamp Challenge

June 6th, 2008

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot of San Diego found themselves in a bit of a pinch: they needed a commercial for their upcoming annual Bootcamp Challenge, and they needed it FAST. So, naturally, Groovy to the rescue…

All that was provided was a flyer of this year’s event and a DVD of the footage we had from last years Bootcamp Challenge (edited by the awesome Nili Danielli!)
Poster for Challenge

Special thanks to Sean McHenry of MCCS, and Gunny Sgt. Patino for his warm vocal stylings!

explaining a cause with no words

June 3rd, 2008

Through a post on twitter (hello @BJ!), I came across this interesting “social media” concept called SocialVibe. I had a little bit of trouble understanding what it was all about until I watched the video they produced. Without using any narration, and a half-dozen lines of text, they were able to clearly communicate the entire concept and get me excited to try the service.

I’ll be browsing the SocialVibe site to learn more about it. Maybe look for SocialVibe to show up on Groovy Like a Movie’s Facebook page!

Jib Day at Groovy

June 1st, 2008

We just purchased a new jib to replace one that was stolen out of our van. Dave and Jason took time to come in and give some safety instruction as well as give a lesson on how to take the jib down and put it back up again. Thanks to everyone who gave up time on Saturday to participate!
